IMHO, tough to find a one-device solution for what looking to do. That being said, personally, not really intrigued by the Palm LifeDrive for a couple of reasons: the price/feature ratio is not very good and the Palm OS has never been very good as a multimedia device.
need to know more about what looking for because if really looking to replace a laptop then say your best option would be to get a PDA with Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Professional Edition or a Windows-powered Palm Treo (but this also replaces your cell phone). I think any of these devices are a good alternative to a laptop but if I were forced to pick it would be a WM6 PDA. However, not sure if you can directly connect your digital camera to a WM6 PDA to backup pics.
On the other hand, if willing to forgo the you could also look at a personal media player (PMP), which would be a good device to backup your digital pics. A PMP would also give you a slew of audio/video capabilities, too. For PMPs, recommend taking a look at the Archos 504 or 604 (the 604 comes with WiFi, too).
So, all that being said, here are my thoughts on the various devices:
