Building Your Own Home Movie Theater

If you love watching movies, having your own home movie theater is a dream that many of us have. Not only is it a great way to watch movies in their ideal environment, but is also it can double as a video games room. Additionally, building your very own home movie theater is one good way to increase the value of your home. And of course, it can be enjoyable and relaxing thing to do after a long day. I bet you will agree! Furthermore, you will discover that a home movie theater is so simple to set up once you learn a few basic ideas about the whole thing.

Building a home movie theater is just about re-creating the exact ambiance of the actual movie theater but in a smaller scale. This is made possible through these two aspects:

1. Setting up of the right electronic equipment

2. Designing the interiors of the home theater in a way that it will be able to support the equipments as well as to look like a miniature theater.

Some electronic equipment that you should install in your home movie theater are:

o A large TV screen (the projector screens are more appropriate).

o Speakers

o DVD player or other movie player

The bigger your screen is the more real movie theater feel you will create. Plus, the quality of the surround sound also contributes greatly to the over-all ambiance of home movie theater.

If you have the budget to build a separate room, you can choose to install a large theater projector for viewing the movie. And certainly, large viewing screens are the better option for creating an authentic movie theater atmosphere compared to the big TV screens. Plus, projectors are not as expensive as the large screen TVs or flat wide screen TVs.

One more advantage of a projector is that you can also use it for presentations since it can receive output from a computer too. It is also very light that you can take it from home to office without a problem.

As I continue to build this blog, I hope to give more advice on how I built my own home movie theater. It is rather modest, but it brings pleasure to the whole family.

The Skin I Live In

The Skin I Live In joins the forces of Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas for the first time in a long time. The movie tells the story of Dr Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, who has been interested in creating a fake skin since his wife was burned in a car crash. But he achieves this breakthrough with the assistance of Vera (Elena Anaya) a young woman he’s keeping locked up in his mansion. The only person who knows about this unusual arrangement is his maid Marilia (Marisa Paredes). But his secret, as well as ones from his past that he’s desperate to keep hidden, bubble to the surface when Marila’s criminal son shows up with a gun, forces his way into Vera’s room, and attempts to rape her.

Not a mainstream movie, this played at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. It has been very well received by critics:

Not for everyone – there will be heated debate about at least one plot turn – but high-level filmmaking. The year’s classiest horror movie.
It’s constructed to induce kinky shudders, delivering them with the ghoulish technical flair of a purring master.
This is a smart, complex and intelligent movie, from a filmmaker at the top of his game. Banderas delivers a cultured performance, though really the full ensemble deserve great credit.
A skilful piece of storytelling that reorganises time and, in a characteristic Almodóvar fashion, challenges our preconceptions about everyday life and personal conduct.

Unfortunately, it might not be so easy to see in a public theater, so might be one for the home cinema system.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – Coming Soon

Based on the classic novel by John Le Carre, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is set in the UK in 1973 at the height of the cold war. British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) head Control (John Hurt) and his top-ranking lieutenant George Smiley (Gary Oldman) are both forced into retirement after a mission involving respected secret agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) turns unexpectedly deadly. As the Cold War continues to escalate, suspicions of a Soviet double agent begin to grow within the SIS. Subsequently summoned by Undersecretary Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney), Smiley is secretly reemployed by the SIS in order to root out the double agent suspected of sharing top-secret British intelligence with the Russians. Meanwhile, as Smiley and his new partner Agent Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch) begin systematically examining all of the official missions and records involving MI6, the veteran spy can’t help but recalling an encounter he once had with Karla, a dangerous Russian operative, years prior. At first, uncovering the identity of the infiltrator seems nearly impossible. Smiley and Guillam get a big break, however, when undercover agent Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy) reveals that he has fallen for a mysterious woman in Turkey named Irina (Svetlana Khodchenkova) who may have a crucial lead. Later, upon learning that Control had comprised a list of five possible suspects, code named Tinker (Toby Jones), Tailor (Colin Firth, Soldier (Ciarán Hinds), Poor Man (David Dencik) and Spy – none other than Smiley himself – the investigation begins to heat up again.

The cast for this movie is absolutely first class. I think this will be a strong contender for the movie of the year. My only reservation is that it might draw comparisons to the excellent British TV serial of the early 80s.

This Tinker Tailor is a weightless, slo-mo nightmare taking place in what looks like an aquarium filled with poison gas instead of water: I found it more gripping and involving than any crash-bang action picture, and it is anchored by Gary Oldman’s tragic mandarin, a variation on Alec Guinness which transfers the emphasis away from George Smiley’s wounded feelings to his cool capacity for unconcern in the face of violence, a hint of a daredevil past, long mummified by bureaucratic self-control and a schoolmasterly scorn for his victim’s weakness and disloyalty, while seeing how easily any agent could give the wretched Judas kiss. What a treat this film is, and what an unexpected thrill.
